NLP – what's it all mean?

NEURO:
Reality is processed by our five senses and nervous system into experience.

LINGUISTICS:
Our experience is coded, organized and given meaning by language and non-verbal communication systems.

PROGRAMMING:
Discovering, using and changing our behavior, language and non-verbal communication systems to achieve desired outcomes or directions.

Ah ha! - Jedi mind tricks then.

Don't worry - no need to take lessons from Master Yoda. Basically, NLP is the study of perception, behaviour and communication that draws on a diverse range of academic traditions – from psychology to linguists to computer science.

And?

The idea is that we all have our own unique software running through our heads, that is programmed by our beliefs, our values and all that we've seen, been and done. In short, we all have our own take on the world and that ‘take' informs how we communicate and behave in any given situation. We have habitual ways of behaving – our default setting if you like.

NLP provides you with a toolkit full of useful techniques that enable you to achieve the results you want with confidence and purpose.

In the business world, we can use NLP tools and techniques to:

  • Build rapport and maintain successful relationships
  • Learn advanced listening and questioning techniques
  • Influence others with integrity
  • Ensure effective communication – across your organisation and with your customers
  • Move from simple goal setting to creating powerful well-formed outcomes
  • Utilise transformational problem solving techniques
  • Identify and influence habitual thought patterns
  • Replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones
  • Utilise perceptual positions to provide further insights and options in any given situation.

All of which can:

  • increase the effectiveness of sales people
  • build high performing teams and organisations
  • help managers and leaders to become more purposeful and empathic
  • create and manage transformational change
  • provide quick, powerful tools to aid conflict resolution
  • improve customer relations
